Heading out to catch a blockbuster at the cinema this weekend? Next time you get sleepy during the second act, do not blame the director just yet. The venue might need to turn up its fresh-air intake.

It may not be the plot

If you have ever fought off heavy eyelids halfway through a movie—even during an intense action scene—the slow part might not be on screen. The air inside the auditorium can change quickly when a full room shares an enclosed space for two hours.

Two screenings, two very different results

We compared real measurements from screenings with low and high attendance. The difference was striking:

• At 10% attendance, CO2 stayed comfortably below the 1,000 ppm ventilation reference throughout the screening and averaged a fresh 544 ppm. • At roughly 90% attendance, every five-minute CO2 reading was above 1,000 ppm. The screening averaged 1,246 ppm and peaked at 1,312 ppm.

The 1,000 ppm mark is best read here as an operational ventilation reference, not a universal health limit. Above it, CO2 indicates that outdoor-air delivery is not keeping pace with the people in the room. Poorly ventilated indoor environments with elevated CO2 have been associated with fatigue, drowsiness, and reduced cognitive performance, although CO2 is only one part of the indoor environment.

Temperature added another comfort problem. The low-attendance screening reached 27°C, while the high-attendance screening averaged 27.4°C. Warm, stuffy conditions are hardly ideal for staying alert through the final act.

Filtration was not the main problem

Fine-particle pollution (PM2.5) stayed low during both screenings, suggesting that particle source control and filtration were performing well. Radon readings also remained low during the observation windows—a separate positive result, although a short screening cannot establish a building’s long-term radon average.

The main operational signal was CO2. Particle filters can capture airborne particles, but they do not remove the carbon dioxide exhaled by an audience. That requires enough outdoor air to keep pace with occupancy.

The practical takeaway for cinema operators

Before a busy screening, bring the ventilation system to occupied mode, verify that outdoor-air dampers are open, and maintain the higher airflow throughout the film. If CO2 keeps rising after the system reaches full airflow, the outdoor-air delivery and room capacity need to be reviewed by an HVAC professional.
